Just another friday....

To sarah Maple,
I am a muslim female and i have seen your website. I have to say i am terribly disappointed in you. The images that i have seen you take and the paintings that you have done just discriminate and completely offend the status of muslim women. You are not representing yourself through your art but you are representing your religion. I have to say that the way you are portraying islam is absolutely disgusting! islam is such a pure and true religion and seeing as you're "supposedly" a muslim women you should know better and know that your religion is not like that. You are mocking islam and i find that highly offensive.
Islam encourages women to be modest and safe guard their body and you are doing the complete opposite. I have to honestly say that you have no shame. Islam guards the honour of muslim women and you're degrading them by showing them in a bad light. The fact that you state that you're muslim and you're doing this makes the situation ten times worse.
Putting aside the issue of islam, generally women would not want to be disgraced or ashamed in this way. you're an insult to women. You're using islam as an excuse for your artwork just shows how highly you think of your religion(!)
To be honest i dont even see your work as art, i just seriously think that you must have something REALLY wrong with you to come up with ideas like that! you honestly have a filthy mind! grow up.
I hope allah guides you and brings you to the right path. nothing is wrong with expressing yourself but do it the correct way! you will be in your grave alone and your stupid artwork and mocking of islam will not help you! i could not stand by and watch you disgrace my religion!
I cant explain the amount of anger i have towards you!!

Islam is a so nice way, so sad some turn it and live it so reactionary.

In fact it's just between you and your God.

No human, male or female should speak in the name of (a) god.
(Unless she or he is in some kind of trance, like a santero ride by an Orisha)

Note that I'm not sure God, or gods and goddess do exist, or that they do care about us, if existing.

Anyway, keep on doing it your way, thanks a lot for your Art!

(and sorry for my frenglish;)

Just discovered your work Sarah... Thank you so much for addressing some of today's contentious issues! That's what art should do, surely? Your work challenges our own complicity in the subordination of women - east AND west - I love your work - it makes us THINK!!! Your mixed heritage is shown in your work and helps to show that the 'feminist movements' have not moved far enough. Well done!

One of an artist's 'jobs' is to incite comment and debate, whether negative or positive and to create questions and discussion about issues you raise in your work. That is exactly why you create and express your ideas for public consumption.

I am not muslim but I am equally angry about the overly sexualised treatment of women in western society as that commenter is towards you...a concept you return to repeatedly in your work - with humour and intelligence.

I have gained much greater insight in what it feels like to be muslim woman living in a traditonally Christian westernised democracy as you do, through your work. Though I cannot relate to your output as a muslim, I can relate to it as a woman. I, as just one person have been educated through your work and that is reason enough to continue.

Your commenter has a right to reply and express their opinion, just remember that for every 1 comment you get like that there are probably 10 people who like and support your work but do not feel the need to comment. Anger is a far greater motivation :)

.No one can say which path is the right one. No one can tell what person is only bad or only good. No one can judge the other, not convicted himself. No one can know that his opinion is correct. No one can really know what another person is feeling.

Yesterday I was in Tallinn, celebrated Estonian Independence day, and finally saw your work. I am glad that I was able to see it. Howevermy opinion could be wrong. It would be interesting just to talk about it.

Respectfully,

The way people understand Islam in the Arab world is crazy, all you haters do not really understand what Sarah is pointing out,, first of all her dad is Christian yet she chose to be Muslim, that doesn't make her a hater second of all she is not pointing out religion she is pointing out how women in the islam is treated with a degrading way not because of religion but because of culture and how for hundreds of years all men have been treating women in such a bad way, even in the law men get 2/3 and women get 1/3
and the wife gets nothing
soooo hear her out
